The brand new London show Motown The Musical is inspired from a book by Berry Gordy Jr., who is the founder of Motown. The musical is inspired from the 1994 autobiography which tells his life saga as well as his life long relationships with various stars such as Diana Ross, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, and The Temptations.

The show is set in the year 1983 with ensemble cast of 40 performers, where all the stars gather for the celebration of silver jubilee celebration of Motown records. The story then takes back to a few years back, when Berry Gordy was a young boy in Detroit, Michigan.

With the collaboration of words Motor and Town, Motown Records has been named. This brand has been synonymous with pop infused soul sound. Moreover, the record label achieved great success from 1960 to 1969 as 79 records featured in the Top Ten of Billboard Hot 100 chart. Motown Records has considerable role in changing the music industry.

Charles Randolph-Wright directed the Broadway production and was nominated for four Tony awards. On April 2013, the show made its debut at Lunt Fontanne Theatre, whereas closed in January 2015.
